Keivin Mosby Died At Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles

Investigation Underway After Keivin Mosby, 35, Died in Custody at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles County

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (October 1, 2025) – A 35-year-old man identified as Keivin Mosby has died while staying at the notorious Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on August 5. Correctional officers noticed that Keivin Mosby was in medical distress.

Paramedics and jail staff were called to the scene to help him. Very few details about the incident have been released thus far.

Sadly, the efforts to save Keivin Mosby were not successful, and he was pronounced dead at the jail.

Liability for Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Every person who is incarcerated throughout the state of California has certain rights that must be protected by the constitution. They have a right to due process and a fair trial. But far too many people have these rights violated when they die before ever being convicted of the crime they are being held for. According to one report by Reuters, “Unlike state and federal prisons, which hold people convicted of serious crimes, jails are locally run lockups meant to detain people awaiting arraignment or trial, or those serving short sentences. The toll of jail inmates who die without a case resolution subverts a fundamental tenet of the U.S. criminal justice system: innocent until proven guilty.” There are several ways a jail may have contributed to an inmate’s death.

  • Inadequate Monitoring: Correctional officers may have failed to adequately monitor inmates during their stay. Certain inmates may need to be closely monitored if they have medical conditions or are otherwise vulnerable.
  • Delayed Response: Correctional officers may fail to get an inmate emergency care in the minutes and hours leading up to a serious emergency.
  • Improper Medical Treatment: Correctional officers may have failed to follow the guidelines given by nurses or other medical professionals.
  • Warning Signs: Correctional officers may fail to notice clear warning signs that an inmate was in serious medical distress in the days and hours leading up to their death.

It is vital that inmates receive timely medical care for all of their conditions. But far too often, this does not take place. Part of the problem is that many jails are plagued by poor conditions. This is particularly true at the Men’s Central Jail. According to one report by Vera, the Men’s Central Jail has been scheduled to be closed for years, though it remains open. Inmates face a variety of harsh conditions stemming from overcrowding and inadequate services. If a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate who died, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim.

Steps to Take After Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

It can be difficult to know where to begin after any inmate death. Jails will rarely be transparent about what took place. They are likely to say that the death was due to “natural” causes. But this can be very misleading. Surviving family members should take certain actions to ensure that their legal rights are being protected after any loved one dies in custody.

  • Official Reports: All official reports tied to the death should be reviewed. These reports often lack critical information and can be one-sided, but they can still be useful in establishing a timeline of what took place.
  • Policies and Procedures: Any documents that outline the policies and procedures that jail staff are supposed to follow should be reviewed. Many inmate deaths involve clear violations of internal policies.
  • Independent Review: It is always a good idea to have any inmate death independently reviewed by someone with extensive knowledge of civil rights law.

One of the great advantages of having a civil rights litigator review any particular incident is that they don’t charge anything up front. They can review the unique facts of your case free of cost and let you know if you have a claim that can be pursued. If any inmate death was the result of deliberate indifference, surviving family members can seek some measure of justice and accountability through a civil claim.
