FRESNO, CALIFORNIA (October 11, 2025) – A man in his 60s was seriously injured in a Fresno bus accident along Blackstone Avenue, north of Gettysburg Avenue.

Fresno Police Department officials are saying that the collision took place around 12:15 PM on Sunday. Surveillance video shows that the pedestrian may have fallen into the street before being run over by the rear tires of a bus as it was pulling away.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. He sustained a serious injury to his right arm. EMS transported him to CRMC in critical condition.

A full investigation into the Fresno bus accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Fresno Pedestrian Accidents

Buses are considered common carriers, and their drivers must exercise a great deal of caution to avoid accidents. According to Squaw Valley Ski Corp. v. Superior Court, “This elevated standard of care for common carriers has its origin in English common law. It is based on a recognition that the privilege of serving the public as a common carrier necessarily entails great responsibility, requiring common carriers to exercise a high duty of care towards their customers.” Bus companies should take many actions to avoid collisions with pedestrians.

  • Driver Training: Bus companies should ensure that their drivers receive regular training. This includes advising their drivers to monitor blind spots and to drive defensively.
  • Policies: Bus companies should create and enforce policies that prioritize safety. Among other things, bus drivers should be prohibited from using their phones and engaging in other distractions while driving.
  • Technology: Bus companies should strongly consider having technological features such as 360 cameras to alert drivers when pedestrians are in blind spots.
  • Maintenance: Bus companies should ensure that their vehicles are periodically inspected and well maintained.

Every bus driver must be particularly cautious when pedestrians are nearby. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code § 21950, the driver of a vehicle must yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian that is crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection. When a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian, this may be considered negligence. The company or city that a bus driver worked for could also be held at fault for a collision. Employers are usually vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of workers who are performing their job duties.

Steps to Take After a Fresno Bus Accident

Bus accidents can leave victims with serious injuries and often result in fatalities. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, “On average, from 2010 to 2022, intercity buses accounted for 10 percent, and school buses and transit buses accounted for 38 percent and 36 percent, respectively, of all buses involved in fatal crashes.” Certain actions should be taken after any bus accident.

  • Medical Attention: Victims of bus accidents should seek a thorough medical evaluation as soon as possible. Many of the injuries associated with bus accidents will not be immediately obvious. It is also possible that injuries may worsen with time and lack of treatment.
  • Police Investigation: The police should be called to the scene as soon as possible. They can begin an initial investigation and interview witnesses to help get to the bottom of what happened.
  • Evidence Preservation: All evidence related to the crash should be preserved. Photos of the site should be taken, and surveillance footage that may have captured the incident should be sought.
  • Legal Review: An experienced bus accident attorney can play a crucial role after any pedestrian collision. They can help identify all liable parties, preserve evidence, and help victims fully understand their legal options.

Bus companies and their insurance providers will virtually never accept responsibility if they seriously injure a pedestrian. It is more likely that they would blame the victim for what happened. This is why it is important to avoid speaking with insurance adjusters after any bus accident. Instead, victims should carefully consider their legal options with an experienced attorney. In general, any person injured in a bus accident may be able to pursue damages through a personal injury claim.
