LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (February 15, 2026) – A woman identified as Deris Renoj has tragically died in a Los Angeles car accident at the 99 Ranch Market grocery store.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the accident took place around 12:11 PM on Thursday, February 5. First responders were called after getting a report of a traffic accident at S. Westwood Blvd. and Rochester Avenue.

They discovered that a car went through the front entrance of the 99 Ranch Market grocery store before hitting a bicyclist and several other victims. Deris Renoj was listed among the victims.

She worked at the store along with another coworker who was hit. A third victim was identified as a customer. Despite life-saving measures, Deris Renoj died due to the severity of her injuries.

You can help support her family through GoFundMe. According to the online fundraiser, “She leaves behind her devoted husband, five children, and six grandchildren who meant everything to her. She was also a loving daughter, sister, and aunt, and the heart of her family. Her home was always a place of love, laughter, warmth, and comfort that only she could give. She loved deeply and was loved beyond words.”

Liability for Los Angeles Car Accidents

All drivers have a legal obligation to operate their vehicle at a safe speed to avoid hitting any pedestrians. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” There are many ways that a driver may have acted negligently prior to a collision.

  • Pedal Confusion: Many accidents where vehicles go through storefronts involve situations where drivers experience “pedal confusion.” They mistake the accelerator for the brakes.
  • Distracted Driving: A driver may have been distracted by their phone or many other objects.
  • Inclement Weather: A driver may have been traveling too fast during poor weather conditions.
  • Aggressive Driving: A driver may have been weaving in and out of traffic before losing control of their vehicle.

Depending on the specific facts of any case, liability for any collision could extend beyond any driver deemed to be at fault. For example, the company that owned a store could bear some level of responsibility for the collision. Property owners have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe environment to prevent foreseeable sources of harm. A property could be considered in a dangerous condition if it lacked bollard posts to prevent vehicles from intruding into storefronts.

Steps to Take After Los Angeles Car Accidents

Accidents involving vehicles that drive into storefronts may seem like freak occurrences, but these incidents are actually quite common. According to the Storefront Safety Council, “Our data shows that every year in the United States, vehicles crash into commercial buildings and related structures more than 100  per day.  These storefront crash incidents involve collisions with retail stores, offices, bus stops, shopping centers, post offices, restaurants, and more.” Many actions should be taken after any person is injured in a Los Angeles car accident.

  • Medical Treatment: Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible. Many of the injuries associated with a collision will not be immediately obvious.
  • Evidence Preservation: All of the evidence associated with the event should be collected and preserved. This includes any photos of the accident site.
  • Police: The police should be called to the scene as early as possible so that they can begin an investigation.
  • Legal Review: The family of any person who died in a Los Angeles car accident should seek the guidance of a team with ample experience in tort claims.

The vast majority of accidents involving situations where vehicles drive into storefronts are preventable. They tend to involve drivers that are either distracted or speeding. It is important that the victims of these collisions and their families understand that they do have legal rights. The family of any person who died in a car accident is able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
