BARSTOW, CALIFORNIA (February 20, 2026) – A 35-year-old Apple Valley man identified as Anthony Jackson has tragically died in a San Bernardino County car accident on Highway 247.

San Bernardino County officials are saying the accident took place around 1:45 PM on Saturday, January 19. A Mack Anthem truck hauling a trailer struck Anthony Jackson for undetermined reasons as it was heading north.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. He was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries.

Despite life-saving measures, Anthony Jackson died due to the severe nature of his injuries. A full investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing.

You can help support the family of the victim through GoFundMe. According to the online fundraiser, “Tina’s son was loved by all who knew him. Not a single person ever had a negative thing to say about him, and his kindness touched the lives of everyone around him. His presence brought joy and comfort to his family, friends, and community, and his memory will always be cherished.”

Liability for San Bernardino County Pedestrian Accidents

Truck drivers must obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate their vehicles with a great deal of care to avoid collisions. According to California Vehicle Code 21950, drivers must operate their vehicles with the caution necessary to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway. Even if a pedestrian is outside of a marked crosswalk, this does not relieve a driver of their duty of care to slow down and use caution. Truck companies should take several measures to prevent pedestrian collisions.

  • Training: Truck companies should ensure that all of their drivers are properly certified and well trained.
  • Route Planning: Truck companies should carefully plan the routes that their drivers take. These routes should avoid densely populated areas and eliminate as many left turns as possible.
  • Maintenance: Truck companies should ensure that their vehicles are periodically inspected and well maintained.
  • Technology: Truck companies should strongly consider adopting technological features like automatic emergency braking.

If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with the pedestrian, they could be liable for the accident through a civil claim. Liability for any specific accident could extend beyond a driver who acted negligently. The company that a truck driver worked for could also be responsible. Employers are typically responsible for the negligent actions of their workers who were operating within their job duties. However, truck companies will typically limit their legal exposure for accidents by hiring their drivers as independent contractors.

Steps to Take After San Bernardino County Pedestrian Accidents

Commercial trucks are involved in many serious injury and fatal collisions every year. Pedestrians and those in passenger vehicles are particularly at risk. According to the FMCSA, “In 2022, on average, there were 1.12 fatalities in fatal crashes involving large trucks. In 90 percent of those crashes, there was only one fatality. The majority, 82 percent, of fatalities were not occupants of the large truck.” A number of different steps should be taken after any pedestrian accident.

  • Police Report: The police should be called to the scene so that they can investigate. The report that they create should be carefully reviewed.
  • Evidence Preservation: All of the physical and digital evidence related to the collision should be collected. This includes photos of the accident site and debris left on the roadway after the crash.
  • Event Data Recorder: The event data recorder for the truck involved in the crash should be closely examined. This device will contain a number of critical pieces of information related to how the truck was being operated prior to a collision.
  • Independent Review: The family of any person who died in a truck accident should consider their legal options with a team experienced in accident reconstruction and tort claims.

Truck drivers are often pushed to work long hours at all times of the night and day. They are supposed to take periodic rest breaks and limit the number of hours they work in a given day. But these regulations are often ignored. This can lead to situations where overworked truck drivers make key errors. It is important that the victims of truck accidents understand that they do have legal rights. In particular, the family of any person who died due to the negligent actions of a truck driver is able to seek some measure of transparency and accountability through California Civil Code 377.60.
