Cesar Paz, Daniel Tam Injured in South Lake Tahoe Truck Accident

Cesar Paz, 22, Seriously Injured In South Lake Tahoe Car Accident on Highway 50 While Changing Tires

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIFORNIA (March 5, 2026) – A 22-year-old man identified as Cesar Paz was one of three people injured in a South Lake Tahoe car accident on Highway 50.

El Dorado County officials are saying that the accident took place on February 16. Cesar Paz was one of two good Samaritans who stopped to assist Daniel Tam as he was placing tire chains on his vehicle.

At the same time, the driver of a pickup truck lost control on a snowy stretch of road and ran into the group of people. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims.

Daniel Tam was hospitalized after the collision. Cesar Paz was also transported to the hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. You can help support him through GoFundMe

According to the online fundraiser, “On Monday, February 16th, while we were at Lake Tahoe on vacation, my brother-in-law showed his generous spirit by stopping to help a couple put chains on their tires. In a tragic turn of events, a truck coming from the opposite direction lost control and struck him. The accident left him with multiple fractures, including broken ribs, a burst artery, a broken collar bone, a perforated lung, a perforated esophagus, and several concussions.”

Liability for South Lake Tahoe Car Accidents

Drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid colliding with other vehicles and pedestrians in the roadway. This necessitates that they maintain their vehicle at a safe speed at all times. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” Drivers should take extra precautions during adverse weather.

  • Stay Home: When possible, it may be advisable to simply stay home during particularly poor weather conditions.
  • Speed: Drivers may need to travel substantially below the speed limits, particularly if they’re in icy or snowy weather conditions.
  • Follow Distance: Drivers must maintain a safe follow distance at all times. This distance should be dramatically increased during poor weather.

If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with other vehicles or pedestrians, this could be considered negligence. Liability for any car accident could extend beyond a specific driver deemed to be at fault. For example, an employer could be liable for an accident if a pickup truck or other vehicle is being used for commercial purposes. Generally speaking, employers can be vicariously liable for the negligent conduct of their workers.

Steps to Take After South Lake Tahoe Car Accidents

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death across California. Many of these collisions take place during poor weather conditions. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, “On average, there are over 6,035,000 million vehicle crashes each year. Approximately 12 percent of these crashes – nearly 745,000 – are weather-related.” Certain measures should be taken after South Lake Tahoe car accidents.

  • Medical Treatment: Victims should seek medical treatment as soon as they can.
  • Evidence Preservation: All of the evidence and records related to the collision should be sought.
  • Legal Review: Any person injured in a car accident should seek the guidance of an experienced personal attorney. They can take steps to secure evidence and protect the rights of victims.

It would be hard to know what to do after being injured in a California car accident. Many victims are left overwhelmed with serious injuries and high bills. Unfortunately, insurance companies are almost never helpful in these sorts of incidents. They will never accept responsibility when their driver causes a collision. This is why it’s so important that accident victims carefully consider their options with experienced legal counsel.
