SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIFORNIA (February 18, 2026)—Three men from the Bay Area were injured in a car accident on Highway 20, not far from South Lake Tahoe.
The California Highway Patrol is saying that the collision took place around 12:45 PM on Sunday. The men were fixing tire chains along a snowy portion of Highway 50 near Tahoe.
The driver of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck lost control on the roadway before colliding with their KIA. The force of the impact caused one of the men to be hurled 40 feet into the air.
Two other men were dragged by the pickup truck. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims.
All three of them were transported to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for South Lake Tahoe Car Accidents
Every driver has a legal obligation to use caution to avoid causing car accidents. To that extent, they must maintain a safe speed at all times. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” There are many circumstances where a driver may need to travel well below the speed limit.
- Drivers will typically need to slow down during periods of reduced visibility.
- Drivers will need to slow down when there is snow or potentially ice on the roadway.
- Drivers should slow down during periods of stop-and-go traffic.
- Drivers may need to slow down along curves in the roadway.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that allows their vehicle to exit a lane of traffic and collide with another vehicle outside of that lane. Depending on the specific facts of any case, liability for a car accident may extend beyond any specific driver deemed at fault. For example, the company that owned or operated a pickup truck could be responsible for a collision. Pickup trucks are routinely used for commercial purposes in a wide variety of industries.
Steps to Take After South Lake Tahoe Car Accidents
Car accidents remain a leading cause of preventable injury and death across California in the United States. According to the IIHS, “Although the U.S. population has grown continuously since the 1970s, the rate of crash deaths per 100,000 people in 2023 was 41% lower than it was in 1975, and the rate per 100 million miles traveled has declined 62%.” Certain actions should be taken after any car accident in California.
- Medical Care: Victims should seek medical care as soon as possible. A number of the injuries associated with any collision may not be immediately obvious.
- Police Report: The police report created after the accident should be preserved. This report represents an officer’s best impression of what happened, but these reports can also contain inaccuracies.
- Evidence Preservation: All of the evidence associated with the collision should be preserved. This will include photos of the accident site and the vehicles involved in the crash.
- Legal Support: Accident victims should seek the guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney. An attorney can examine the unique facts of any case and help you understand how much compensation you may be entitled to.
Being injured in a car accident is often one of the most difficult things that most people will go through in their lives. Many victims are left with life-altering injuries and very high medical bills. To make matters worse, drivers and their insurance providers will virtually never accept responsibility for any collision. This is why it is so important for victims to strongly consider seeking legal guidance. There is no upfront cost to hire an attorney to help after an accident, and they only get paid if they are able to successfully resolve your case.
