Michael Fiscus Killed in Placer County Truck Accident

Michael Fiscus, 57, Died After Big Rig Trailer Detached and Crashed Into Pickup on Interstate 80 in Placer County

PLACER COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (June 10, 2026) – A 57-year-old man identified as Michael Fiscus has tragically died in a Placer County truck accident on Interstate 80 by Placer Hills Road.

Placer County officials are saying the accident took place on May 26. Michael Fiscus was heading down the road in a pickup truck when his vehicle was hit by a detached trailer from a big rig truck that was heading westbound.

The driver of the big rig truck apparently lost control, which caused the trailer to detach. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim.

Despite life-saving measures, Michael Fiscus died due to the severity of his injuries. The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

Liability for Placer County Truck Accidents

Every truck driver in California has a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid collisions. This necessitates that they maintain their vehicle with a safe speed at all times. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” Truck drivers should take several actions to avoid losing control of their vehicle.

  • Truck drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them and keep an eye out for potential hazards.
  • Truck drivers should avoid making abrupt lane changes or movements.
  • Truck drivers should ensure that their vehicles are periodically inspected and well maintained.
  • Truck drivers should focus on driving defensively at all times and obeying all traffic laws.

If a truck driver fails to maintain their vehicle in a single lane of traffic and loses control, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Depending on the specific facts of any case, there could be several sources of liability for any truck accidents. This includes the company responsible for attaching the trailer of a truck. If the trailer of a truck is not properly attached, this could cause a trailer to come loose. The company that loaded cargo onto a truck could also bear some level of responsibility. A significant portion of accidents where a truck driver loses control involves cargo shift.

Steps to Take After Placer County Truck Accidents

Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in preventable truck accidents. According to the FMCSA, “There were 1,097 large truck occupant fatalities in 2022, an increase of 9 percent from the 1,011 fatalities in 2021. In 2022, 83 percent of these occupant fatalities were drivers of large trucks, and 17 percent were passengers in large trucks.” There are many different actions that should be taken after any truck accident.

  • All of the physical data associated with the crash should be collected and preserved.
  • Lots of photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • It should be determined if cargo shift may have played a role in the crash.
  • The police report created after the crash should be carefully reviewed.
  • The history of accidents along the road in question should be studied.
  • The family of any person who died in a collision should seek an independent review by a team experienced in accident claims.

Truck accidents can be absolutely devastating for victims. Many people are so seriously injured that they’re never able to return to work. Of course, many families must contend with the loss of loved ones after these crashes. Truck accidents tend to be highly preventable in many different situations. Unfortunately, truck carriers and their insurance providers will almost never accept responsibility if they are involved in a fatal crash. This is why it is so important these accidents are investigated by an outside party.
