LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (July 13, 2026) – A 77-year-old grandfather identified as Arnulfo Hernandez was seriously injured in a downtown Los Angeles car accident by the intersection of 28th Street and Maple Avenue.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on June 20. Arnulfo Hernandez was selling tamales by the intersection when he was hit by a vehicle.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. Arnulfo Hernandez was hospitalized with serious injuries, including hip replacement surgery and fractures in both of his feet.

You can help support the victim and his family as he continues to recover through GoFundMe.

According to the online fundraiser, “For more than 20 years, our grandparents have been a familiar part of the community in Los Angeles selling homemade tamales on the corner of Maple Ave and E 28th St. This small business has been their only source of income and the way they have supported themselves through years of hard work. On Saturday June 20th 2026, at around 9:00 AM, our grandfather, Arnulfo Hernandez, was struck by a car.”

Liability for Los Angeles Car Accidents

Drivers in California must use caution to avoid colliding with bicyclists and pedestrians. This requires that they maintain a safe speed at all times. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” There are many ways that a driver may have acted negligently aside from speeding.

  • A driver may have failed to check their blind spots before turning at an intersection.
  • A driver may have made an unsafe lane change.
  • A driver may have been distracted by looking at their phone.
  • A driver may allow themselves to become dangerously fatigued after working or driving for extended periods.

If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian, this could serve as evidence of negligence. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of a driver that enters onto a sidewalk and hits a pedestrian. These types of collisions are nearly always the result of drivers that are disobeying one or more traffic regulations. Any person injured due to the actions of a driver in Los Angeles may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a civil claim.

Steps to Take After Los Angeles Car Accidents

As Los Angeles has continued to grow over the years, so too have the number of preventable pedestrian accidents. According to the County of Los Angeles Public Health, “Fatalities from traffic collisions, particularly those involving pedestrians and bicyclists, are a significant and growing public crisis in Los Angeles County. Over the past decade (2015-2024), fatalities from traffic collisions in unincorporated communities of LA have been and continue to be high with an average of 88 deaths per year.” Several steps should be taken after any LA car accident.

  • The police report for the crash should be sought.
  • All medical records related to injuries should be preserved.
  • The insurance information from drivers involved should be collected.
  • Victims should consider their legal options with an experienced attorney.

Accidents tend to be highly preventable, but this does not stop negligent drivers and their insurance providers from doing everything in their power to avoid responsibility. Any person injured in a pedestrian accident is protected by a number of laws. They’re able to pursue damages through a personal injury claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. A car accident attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
