James Wehr, 27: one of two people found dead after a sports car split in two and burned in Orange County
IRVINE, CALIFORNIA (September 13, 2026): Two people died early Sunday when a 2019 McLaren sports car crashed and caught fire at Culver Drive and Deerfield Avenue, according to the Irvine Police Department. Spokesman Kyle Oldoerp said the McLaren was stopped at the signal and, when the light turned green at about 12:20 a.m., accelerated northbound on Culver Drive at a high rate of speed. Police said the driver lost control, veered to the right, struck a curb and slammed into a tree, splitting the car in two before it burst into flames, as reported by NBC Los Angeles and MyNewsLA. Orange County Fire Authority crews extinguished the fire.
Firefighters found two people dead inside the wreckage, NBC Los Angeles reported, citing Irvine police. One of the men killed was identified as James Wehr, 27, founder of South OC Cars and Coffee, according to reporting cited by MyNewsLA and NBC Los Angeles. The Orange County medical examiner’s office had not confirmed the second person’s identity at publication. A neighbor told NBC Los Angeles that the flames reached 10 to 12 feet high. No other vehicles were reported involved, and police have not said which occupant was driving. The investigation remains open.

- Which occupant was driving: Authorities have not identified the driver. That single fact decides whether one family holds a claim, and physical evidence usually answers it.
- Roadside environment: The car struck a curb and then a tree. Whether fixed objects sat inside the clear recovery area of northbound Culver Drive is a roadway design question.
- Post-crash fire: The vehicle split apart and burned. Fuel system integrity and structural performance in a severe impact are examined once a vehicle is preserved.
A negligence claim asks whether a driver owed a duty of ordinary care, breached it, and caused the harm that followed.
