1000 block of East Main Street: a semi-truck pulling out of a driveway collided with a westbound Nissan Murano, which ended up trapped beneath the trailer

EL CENTRO, CALIFORNIA (October 5, 2026): A 29-year-old Brawley woman was killed in an El Centro truck crash on Monday morning, October 5, in the 1000 block of East Main Street near North Earls Street, according to the El Centro Police Department, as reported by KYMA and the Desert Review. Police said the collision happened at about 8 a.m.
According to the department’s preliminary findings, a semi-truck was leaving a driveway in the 1000 block of East Main Street and trying to turn east onto Main Street when it collided with a silver Nissan Murano traveling west in the No. 1 lane. Officers arriving at the scene found the Murano, which police described as a small sedan, trapped underneath the semi’s trailer with significant damage.
The woman driving the Murano was its only occupant. Paramedics treated her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released. Police said the driver of the semi-truck was not injured, and no arrest has been reported.
An El Centro police traffic collision investigator is handling the case, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information can contact Collision Investigator Officer Jason Flores at 760-352-2111.
Liability for the El Centro Truck Crash
Under California Civil Code § 1714, every driver must use ordinary care, and commercial drivers are held to that standard while operating vehicles that can weigh many times more than a passenger car. Vehicle Code § 21804 generally requires a driver entering a road from a driveway or other private property to yield to approaching traffic that is close enough to be a hazard. Based on what El Centro police have released, the questions include:
- Entering from a driveway: Police said the semi was pulling out of a driveway and turning onto Main Street when the collision happened. Whether the driver had enough room and time to complete the turn safely is likely to be central.
- Underride of the trailer: The Murano ended up underneath the trailer. Investigators and experts typically look at the trailer’s height, side guards, lighting and reflective markings when a smaller vehicle goes under a semi.
- The trucking company’s role: Under the doctrine of respondeat superior, an employer is generally responsible for the negligence of a driver acting within the scope of the job, and its hiring, training and safety practices can also be examined.
- Federal safety rules: Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules on hours of service, inspections and maintenance apply to most interstate trucks. Driver logs and inspection records can show whether those rules were followed.
The woman’s family may bring a wrongful death claim under Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 against any party found responsible, which in a truck crash can include the driver, the motor carrier and the owner of the trailer. Commercial trucks usually carry higher insurance limits than passenger cars, and the civil claim is separate from any decision about criminal charges.
Steps to Take After an El Centro Truck Crash
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, most people killed in crashes between large trucks and passenger vehicles are the occupants of the smaller vehicle. Trucking companies often begin their own investigation within hours, so families benefit from acting early to preserve the evidence.
- Request the police report: Ask the El Centro Police Department for the case number and the traffic collision report once the investigator completes it.
- Send a preservation letter: Ask in writing that the motor carrier keep the truck’s electronic logging device data, dashcam video, driver logs and maintenance records.
- Keep the vehicle: Ask that the Murano and the trailer not be repaired or salvaged until both can be inspected and their data downloaded.
- Find nearby video: Businesses along East Main Street may have cameras that captured the driveway and the westbound lanes. Request footage quickly, before it is overwritten.
Wrongful death claims generally must be filed within two years under Code of Civil Procedure § 335.1. If the driveway layout, sight lines or signage on a street maintained by the City of El Centro is examined, a government claim is generally due within six months under Government Code § 911.2.
