Drahkee House Died in Custody at San Diego Central Jail

San Diego Sheriff’s Homicide Officials Investigating Death of Drahkee House in San Diego Central Jail

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (March 22, 2026) – A 45-year-old man identified as Drahkee House has tragically died while staying at the San Diego Central Jail.

San Diego County officials are saying the incident took place around 4:20 AM on March 15. Multiple inmates at the jail alerted deputies that Drahkee House was experiencing some type of medical emergency after he fainted.

He was located in the dayroom of the jail and described as disoriented but responsive. He was taken to the medical clinic at the jail for additional evaluation.

Paramedics arrived at the San Diego Central Jail and transported Drahkee House to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, he went into medical distress once more en route to the hospital.

Doctors later pronounced him deceased at the hospital around 5:20 a.m. that same morning. A full investigation into the death remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Inmate Deaths at the San Diego Central Jail

Every inmate in California has certain inalienable rights afforded under the constitution. Among other things, all inmates have a right to receive reasonably adequate medical care. This was established in the landmark case Estelle v. Gamble. Failing to provide inmates with adequate medical treatment is considered a form of cruel and unusual punishment and therefore a violation under the Eighth Amendment. Care shouldn’t begin only when an inmate is going through a medical emergency. There are many steps that jails should take to help protect inmates.

  • Medical Screening: Jails should ensure that all of the inmates in their care receive a thorough medical screening.
  • Monitoring: Inmates should receive periodic wellness checks. Some inmates may need to be more closely monitored for various reasons.
  • Training: All correctional officers should be trained to monitor the signs that an inmate is in distress. They should also be trained in how to respond in the event of an emergency.

Assessing whether or not a jail is liable for any particular death requires a careful examination of the facts. For example, it matters what correctional officers did in the lead-up to any inmate’s death. In particular, a jail could be liable for an inmate’s death if they acted with deliberate indifference. This could include failing to get an inmate medical assistance when they showed signs of distress. In far too many situations, jails will only wait until an inmate is already in critical condition before taking action. By that time, it may already be too late.

Steps to Take After Inmate Deaths at the San Diego Central Jail

San Diego has long been recognized as being one of the worst places to be a prisoner in California. The county has been sued numerous times after inmates have died in custody. In fact, the county recently reached a $16 million settlement with the family of a man who died in custody at the San Diego Central Jail. Several steps should be taken after any inmate death in San Diego.

  • Jail Records: Every jail keeps detailed records about an inmate’s stay. These should be sought and carefully reviewed.
  • Autopsy: An autopsy should be sought in many cases if one was not already performed.
  • Eyewitnesses: Any person who may have witnessed the incident should be interviewed early on while their memories are still fresh.
  • Constitutional Review: The family of any inmate who died at the San Diego Central Jail should seek an independent review by a team experienced in constitutional law and negligence claims.

It can be hard to know where to begin after any person dies in law enforcement custody. To make matters worse, jails will virtually never be transparent about how any death took place. They are more likely to blame external factors. But the fact of the matter is that many inmate deaths are preventable and involve some amount of neglect. The family of any person who died in custody may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a constitutional claim.
