Cruz Saldana Munoz, 36: a Saturday morning collision at the Los Feliz Boulevard off-ramp left one man dead and another badly hurt
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (August 15, 2026): One man was killed and a second person was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on the northbound Golden State Freeway, Interstate 5, at the Los Feliz Boulevard off-ramp at about 8:25 a.m. Saturday, according to a California Highway Patrol news release reported by MyNewsLA. The CHP said a Toyota Corolla traveling northbound in the No. 4 lane veered onto the right shoulder, then crossed the lanes to its left and struck the center divider. The driver lost control and the Corolla hit a Honda Pilot SUV, propelling both vehicles back toward the right shoulder, where the Corolla struck a concrete wall.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene and a second was hospitalized with major injuries, the CHP said. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner identified the man who died as Cruz Saldana Munoz, 36, and reported he died of multiple blunt force traumatic injuries, per MyNewsLA. Published reports do not specify which vehicle each man was in, and the CHP has not released a cause. What sent the Corolla onto the shoulder, and what happened before it crossed the freeway, remain under investigation by the CHP’s Central Los Angeles office.
Liability for Los Angeles County Freeway Crashes
California Vehicle Code § 21658 (lane maintenance) requires every driver to keep a vehicle within a single marked lane and to move only when it is reasonably safe, which is directly at issue when a car crosses multiple lanes and strikes the center divider. California Vehicle Code § 22350 (basic speed law) prohibits speed unreasonable for conditions, and California Vehicle Code § 21703 (following distance) governs how closely drivers may follow. If the CHP concludes a driver’s negligence caused this collision, California Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 (wrongful death) allows the spouse, domestic partner, children or certain dependents to bring a claim. If shoulder conditions, debris or the off-ramp design contributed, Government Code § 835 (dangerous condition of public property) could add a public entity.
