Jarlath Parkinson: concert tour equipment driver died when his Volvo semi overturned on southbound I-5 south of County Road 95
ZAMORA, CALIFORNIA (August 27, 2026): A 66-year-old truck driver hauling equipment for the J. Cole concert tour died shortly after 6 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, when his big rig overturned on southbound Interstate 5 just south of County Road 95 near Zamora, in rural Yolo County north of Woodland, according to the California Highway Patrol as reported by the Davis Enterprise. The driver was identified as Jarlath Parkinson, 66, of Jackson, South Carolina, according to the Enterprise and KTVU. CHP Officer Rodney Fitzhugh told the Enterprise that the Volvo semi and trailer traveled onto the right shoulder, and that the driver attempted to return to the lane by turning left, lost control and overturned. Parkinson, the only person in the truck, died at the scene.
No other vehicles were involved, and the overturned rig blocked all southbound lanes of Interstate 5, according to the Davis Enterprise. The CHP said neither alcohol nor drugs were believed to be factors. According to the Enterprise and KTVU, Parkinson was transporting gear from a Seattle show to Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, where that evening’s concert was canceled; the arena cited the tragic passing of a member of the touring crew, KTVU reported. Liability for Yolo County Big Rig Rollovers
When a commercial driver dies behind the wheel on a delivery run, the death is generally treated as arising out of employment, and Labor Code § 3600 (workers’ compensation coverage) applies regardless of how the crash happened. That no-fault rule matters in a single-vehicle rollover, because the family need not prove that anyone was negligent to receive benefits. Labor Code § 4700 to § 4702 (death benefits and burial expenses for dependents) set the payments, and Labor Code § 3852 (third-party claims) preserves the right to sue anyone other than the employer whose negligence contributed. Workers’ compensation death benefits include burial expenses and installment payments to a dependent spouse, children or other relatives that, depending on the number of total dependents, can reach $320,000 in California. Because Parkinson lived in South Carolina, the family may have a choice between California benefits, available when the death occurs here, and benefits in the state where he was hired. If the investigation reveals a roadway defect, an equipment failure or negligence by a loading or maintenance company, a wrongful death lawsuit against that third party can recover grief, loss of companionship and lost support, which workers’ compensation does not pay.
Steps to Take After a Yolo County Big Rig Rollover

- Obtain the CHP report: Request the collision report and any MAIT reconstruction documenting the tire marks, the shoulder, the load and the rig’s final position.
- Preserve the truck and its data: Send a preservation letter so the engine control module, electronic logging device, dash camera and maintenance records are not lost.
- Identify the employer and its carrier: Determine which company employed or leased Parkinson and its workers’ compensation and commercial auto insurers.
- File the death benefit claim: Notify the employer in writing and file with the appropriate workers’ compensation agency so the one-year deadline is protected.
