10th Avenue and 60th Street: a car allegedly ran a stop sign, struck two teens and their mother, and its occupants fled on foot
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (September 22, 2026): A 16-year-old boy was killed and his younger sister was seriously injured Tuesday night in a South Los Angeles hit-and-run near 10th Avenue and 60th Street, when a speeding car struck them as they crossed the street with their mother, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The crash happened at about 9:30 p.m. Police told CBS Los Angeles that a blue Nissan Sentra was traveling on 60th Street at high speed when the driver allegedly ran a stop sign and hit the teens. The family was walking in an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection controlled by a stop sign, police told NBC Los Angeles. A relative told CBS Los Angeles that the mother was able to pull the girl out of the way, but the boy was not as fortunate. He died at the scene.
Witnesses said the car kept going, lost control and crashed into a parked vehicle. A woman got out of the driver’s seat and a man got out of the passenger seat, and both ran, according to police and a witness interviewed by NBC Los Angeles. The LAPD said the Sentra was a rental car, and investigators have the vehicle the pair left behind. The girl was hospitalized in stable condition and was awaiting surgery for a pelvic fracture, family members said.

Liability for the South Los Angeles Hit-and-Run
California Vehicle Code § 20001 requires any driver involved in a crash that injures or kills someone to stop, give aid and identify themselves, and leaving the scene is a serious crime. Vehicle Code § 21950 requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks, and § 22450 requires a full stop at stop signs. Based on what police have described, the civil issues include:
- Unmarked crosswalk: Police said the family was in an unmarked crosswalk at a stop sign. California treats unmarked crosswalks at intersections as crosswalks, with the same duty to yield.
- Stop sign and speed: The driver allegedly ran the stop sign at high speed. Violating a safety law can create a presumption of negligence under Evidence Code § 669.
- Flight from the scene: Leaving an injured child in the street is a separate crime and can weigh heavily when a court evaluates the driver’s conduct.
- The rental car: Federal law generally shields rental companies from liability just for owning the car, so the focus is usually on the driver, any negligence by the rental company, and available insurance.
Parents of a child killed in a crash may bring a wrongful death claim under Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60, and an injured child has a separate claim for her own injuries. Any criminal case, if the driver is found, is independent of these civil claims.
Steps to Take After a South Los Angeles Hit-and-Run
