Wheeler Ridge Road at Creekside Drive: Passenger Killed and Driver Seriously Injured When Pickup Crosses Into Oncoming Lane

ARVIN, CALIFORNIA (October 9, 2026): Francisco Javier Pantoja Juarez, 38, of Arvin, was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Wheeler Ridge Road at Creekside Drive, south of Arvin, on the evening of Friday, October 9, 2026, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Kern County Coroner’s Office released his name this week, as reported by KGET and BakersfieldNow (KBAK/KBFX). The CHP said alcohol and/or drugs appeared to be a contributing factor in the crash.
Officers were called to the scene at about 6:44 p.m. According to the CHP’s preliminary investigation, an Arvin man was driving a 2012 Toyota Tacoma pickup south on Wheeler Ridge Road toward Creekside Drive, while a woman was driving a 2016 Honda CR-V north on the same road. The CHP said the Toyota driver made an unsafe turning movement, lost control, crossed the broken yellow center lines and entered the northbound lane, where the pickup collided with the Honda.
Pantoja Juarez was the right-front passenger in the Honda. Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene, the CHP said. The woman driving the Honda suffered severe injuries, and the Toyota driver suffered moderate injuries, according to the CHP. The CHP has not released the name of the Honda driver or her current condition.
The CHP has not said what turning movement the Toyota driver was attempting, how fast either vehicle was traveling, or what tests support its finding on alcohol or drugs. These are early accounts. Fault is determined by investigators and, in civil cases, by the courts, and initial findings sometimes change. No one has been convicted in connection with the crash, and anyone accused of a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The CHP Bakersfield Area office asks anyone with information to call (661) 396-6600.
Liability for Arvin DUI-Related Crashes
Under California Vehicle Code § 21650, drivers must generally stay on the right half of the roadway, and crossing into opposing traffic is a common focus in head-on and lane-crossing crashes. Vehicle Code § 23153 makes it a crime to drive under the influence and cause injury to another person, and Civil Code § 1714 separately makes every person responsible for harm caused by a lack of ordinary care. When someone is killed, Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 lists the family members who may generally bring a wrongful death claim.
- The lane crossing: The CHP said the pickup crossed the broken yellow lines into the northbound lane. Where each vehicle was at the moment of impact is something investigators typically reconstruct from the scene and vehicle data.
- The impairment finding: The CHP said alcohol or drugs appeared to be a factor. In civil cases involving intoxication, courts may also consider punitive damages under Civil Code § 3294.
- A passenger’s family: A passenger who did nothing to cause a crash is generally not at fault. His family’s potential claims are separate from any criminal case and from the claims of the injured driver.
- The injured driver: The woman driving the Honda may have her own injury claim, which can involve the other driver’s auto policy and, in some cases, her own uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.
These are general principles of California law, not conclusions about this crash, which remains under investigation by the CHP.
Steps to Take After an Arvin Fatal Crash
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that more than 12,000 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in the United States in 2023. Families and injured people after a crash like the one on Wheeler Ridge Road can generally:
- Request the CHP report: Ask the CHP Bakersfield Area office for the report number and how to obtain the collision report once it is complete.
- Follow the criminal process: The Kern County District Attorney decides whether to file charges. Under Marsy’s Law, victims and their families have the right to be notified of court dates.
- Preserve evidence early: Photos, witness names, the vehicles themselves and any video from nearby farms, businesses or passing drivers can be lost if no one asks to keep them.
- Keep careful records: Save medical bills, funeral costs, proof of lost income and every letter from an insurance company, and avoid recorded statements until you understand your rights.
Wrongful death and personal injury claims in California are generally subject to the two-year deadline in Code of Civil Procedure § 335.1. Contact an attorney promptly to protect your rights.
