Brawley Avenue at Jensen Avenue: One Man Killed and Six People Hospitalized After a Three-Vehicle Collision

FRESNO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (October 17, 2026): A man riding as a passenger in a Ford Fusion was killed and six other people were hospitalized after a three-vehicle Fresno County crash at Brawley and Jensen avenues on the afternoon of Saturday, October 17, 2026, according to the California Highway Patrol. ABC30 (KFSN) and The Fresno Bee both reported the crash, citing the CHP. The man who died has not been identified.
The crash was reported at about 4:20 p.m. According to CHP Sgt. Adrian Lopez, as reported by the Bee, a gray Ford Fusion was traveling south on Brawley Avenue while a Volkswagen sedan was heading west and a Ford F-150 pickup was heading east on Jensen Avenue. Brawley Avenue has a stop sign at the intersection and Jensen Avenue does not, the Bee reported. The Volkswagen struck the driver’s side of the Fusion, and the F-150 then struck the Fusion’s passenger side, the CHP said.
The male passenger in the Fusion died at the scene. Six other people, including the drivers of all three vehicles and three passengers, were taken to a hospital with injuries ranging from moderate to major, according to the CHP. The CHP said it does not suspect that alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, ABC30 and the Bee reported.
The CHP has not said whether the Fusion stopped at the stop sign before entering the intersection, how fast the other two vehicles were traveling, or the names and conditions of the six injured people. These are early accounts. Fault is determined by investigators and, in civil cases, by the courts, and initial findings sometimes change. Anyone who saw the crash is asked to contact the CHP Fresno Area office.
Liability for Fresno County Intersection Crashes
At an intersection with a stop sign on only one road, California Vehicle Code § 21802 generally requires the driver facing the stop sign to stop and then yield to approaching traffic that is close enough to be a hazard, while drivers on the through road still must use reasonable care. Under Civil Code § 1714, every person is generally responsible for harm caused by a failure to use ordinary care, and when someone is killed, Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 lists the family members who may generally bring a wrongful death claim.
- The stop sign: The CHP has not determined whether the Fusion stopped before entering the intersection. Whether a driver stopped, looked and yielded is usually central in crashes at two-way stops, and investigators often answer it with vehicle data, witness accounts and video.
- Two impacts: The Fusion was struck on both sides, first by the Volkswagen and then by the F-150. When several vehicles are involved, investigators typically examine each driver’s speed, distance and reaction separately.
- A passenger’s rights: A passenger generally has no control over how any of the vehicles is driven. California law generally allows a passenger’s family to bring claims against any driver whose negligence contributed to a crash, which can involve more than one insurance policy.
- Six injured people: Each of the six people who were hospitalized may have a separate injury claim, and the available insurance limits may have to be shared among several people.
These are general principles of California law, not conclusions about this crash, which remains under investigation by the CHP.
Steps to Take After a Fresno County Intersection Crash
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reports that roughly one quarter of traffic deaths and about half of all traffic injuries in the United States are attributed to intersections. After a crash like the one at Brawley and Jensen avenues, injured people and families can generally:
- Request the CHP report: Ask the CHP Fresno Area office for the report number and how to obtain the collision report, diagrams and photographs once the investigation is complete.
- Get complete medical care: Follow up on every injury, including head, neck and back injuries that may seem minor at first, and keep copies of all medical records and bills.
- Preserve evidence: Vehicle data, phone photos, witness names and video from nearby homes or passing drivers can be lost quickly if no one asks to keep them.
- Be careful with insurers: With three vehicles involved, several insurance companies may call. Avoid recorded statements and do not sign releases until you understand your rights.
Personal injury and wrongful death claims in California are generally subject to the two-year deadline in Code of Civil Procedure § 335.1. Contact an attorney promptly to protect your rights.
Investigating the Brawley and Jensen Avenues Crash
We at Carrazco Law, A.P.C., a personal injury and civil rights law firm in Irvine, California, extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the man who died, and we wish the six injured people a full recovery. Two questions remain open: what will the CHP’s reconstruction show about whether the Fusion stopped at the stop sign and where the other two vehicles were when it entered the intersection, and has this intersection seen earlier crashes that county traffic engineers have reviewed? This week we also reported on a fatal Fresno hit-and-run at McKinley and Normal avenues.
