5800 Block of Norwalk Boulevard: Driver and Passenger Die After Pickup Truck Strikes a Tree

WHITTIER, CALIFORNIA (October 18, 2026): Two men were killed when a pickup truck crashed into a tree on the 5800 block of Norwalk Boulevard in Whittier on Sunday morning, October 18, 2026, according to the Whittier Police Department. Lt. Paul Segura said responders found the driver and a passenger dead inside the truck, the Whittier Daily News and City News Service reported.
The crash was reported at about 8:48 a.m., just west of Palm Park, police said. Norwalk Boulevard was temporarily closed between Orange Drive and Orchard Avenue while officers investigated, the Whittier Daily News reported. Video from the scene described by the newspaper showed a gray Dodge Ram pickup partially wrapped around a tree in front of a house near the southbound lanes.
No other vehicles were reported to be involved. City News Service reported that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified both men. Their names have not yet been confirmed by a second source, and this article will be updated when they are.
Police have not said what caused the truck to leave the roadway, how fast it was traveling, which direction it was heading or whether road conditions, a mechanical problem or impairment played a role. These are early accounts. Fault is determined by investigators and, in civil cases, by the courts, and initial findings sometimes change.
Liability for the Whittier Pickup Truck Crash
Under California Civil Code § 1714, every person is generally responsible for injuries caused by a failure to use ordinary care, and that duty applies to drivers toward their own passengers. Vehicle Code § 22350, California’s basic speed law, generally requires a speed that is safe for conditions, and Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 lists the family members who may generally bring a wrongful death claim.
- A passenger’s family: A passenger died in this crash. Under California law, the family of a passenger may generally bring a wrongful death claim when a driver’s negligence caused the death, usually handled through the driver’s auto insurance.
- When the driver also died: The driver was also killed. Probate Code § 550 generally allows a claim against a deceased person to proceed to the extent of that person’s liability insurance.
- The owner of the truck: If the driver did not own the pickup, Vehicle Code § 17150 can generally make the owner responsible, up to limits set by law, for negligence of a driver using it with permission.
- The road and the tree: Investigators will look at the roadway, lighting and the location of the tree. Claims involving a dangerous condition of public property follow Government Code § 835 and special notice rules.
These are general principles of California law, not conclusions about this crash, which remains under investigation.
Steps to Take After a Fatal Whittier Crash
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that crashes in which a single vehicle leaves the road account for a large share of traffic deaths in the United States, and many involve fixed objects such as trees and poles. For families after a crash like this one, these steps can help:
- Request the collision report: Ask the Whittier Police Department for the report number and how to obtain a copy once the investigation is complete.
- Preserve the vehicle: The pickup itself may hold evidence, including data on speed and braking. Ask that it not be repaired, sold or destroyed until it has been examined.
- Identify insurance: Find out which auto policies covered the driver, the truck and the passenger’s own household, since more than one may apply.
- Keep records: Save the medical examiner’s information, funeral and burial costs and any letters from insurers.
Legal deadlines and notice requirements apply after a crash, injury or death, and they vary with the facts of each case, the location and the parties involved, including any public agency. Contact an attorney as soon as possible to protect your rights.
