Olympia Drive and Gallup Drive: Man Struck Beside a Parked Car Dies After the Driver Leaves the Scene

BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA (October 25, 2026): A man was killed in a Bakersfield hit-and-run on Olympia Drive at Gallup Drive shortly after noon on Sunday, October 25, 2026, when a driver veered out of his lane, struck the man and a parked car, and left, according to the Bakersfield Police Department. BakersfieldNow (KBAK/KBFX) and KGET 17 News reported the crash, citing police.
Officers were called to the area at about 12:06 p.m. and found a man with severe injuries in the roadway in the 7500 block of Olympia Drive, in southwest Bakersfield, police said. A vehicle parked on the south shoulder had sideswipe damage. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.
A preliminary investigation found that the man was getting into or out of the parked vehicle when an eastbound black Dodge Challenger veered from its lane and hit both him and the car, according to police. The Challenger was later found abandoned in a nearby neighborhood. Officers contacted a 39-year-old Bakersfield man at his home and arrested him on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, police said. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Police said impairment is believed to have been a contributing factor; KGET reported that investigators believe the driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol.
Police have not released the man’s name or age, and they have not said how fast the Challenger was traveling or whether the parked car was occupied. KGET reported that the driver was due in court on Tuesday. These are early accounts. Fault is determined by investigators and, in civil cases, by the courts, and initial findings sometimes change. Anyone with information is asked to call the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
Liability for a Bakersfield Hit-and-Run
Under California Vehicle Code § 20001, a driver involved in a crash that injures or kills someone must stop at the scene, provide identifying information and render reasonable assistance. Vehicle Code § 23153 makes it unlawful to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, while doing so, commit an act or neglect a duty that causes bodily injury to another person. California Civil Code § 1714 generally makes every person responsible for harm caused by a lack of ordinary care, and Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 generally allows certain family members to bring a wrongful death claim.
- Leaving the lane: Police said the Challenger veered from its lane before hitting the man and the parked car. A driver must stay in the lane and watch for people beside vehicles parked along the shoulder.
- Suspected impairment: Police said impairment is believed to have played a part. The toxicology results and the criminal case are separate from a civil claim, but the evidence developed in one can matter in the other.
- Leaving the scene: The car was found abandoned in a nearby neighborhood, police said. In a civil case, a driver’s decision to leave can be weighed along with the claim that the driver did not use reasonable care.
- Insurance on the vehicles: The insurance on the Challenger, and coverage under the family’s own auto policies, such as uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, may both matter depending on the terms of each policy.
How responsibility is decided will depend on what Bakersfield investigators, the toxicology results and the criminal court record show about the moments before the man was struck.
Steps to Take After a Bakersfield Hit-and-Run
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 7,080 pedestrians died in traffic crashes in the United States in 2024. People standing next to a parked car on a busy street are among the most exposed, and a family often has to gather records while the criminal case moves forward.
- Ask for the report number: Contact the Bakersfield Police Department traffic investigators to confirm the case number and to learn when the collision report can be requested.
- Protect the parked car as evidence: If the parked vehicle belongs to your family, do not repair or sell it until it has been photographed and inspected.
- Look for video: Homes and businesses near Olympia Drive and Gallup Drive may have cameras. Ask them to keep any footage before it is recorded over.
- Be careful with insurers: Speak with a lawyer before giving a recorded statement to the driver’s insurer or signing anything about the claim.
Legal deadlines and notice requirements apply after a crash, injury or death, and they vary with the facts of each case, the location and the parties involved, including any public agency. Contact an attorney as soon as possible to protect your rights.
