Investigation Underway After Multiple People Hospitalized in Second-Story Deck Collapse Accident at San Pedro Home on South Spearing Avenue

SAN PEDRO, CALIFORNIA (December 29, 2025) – At least five people were injured when a second-story deck of a San Pedro home collapsed on the 3500 block of South Spearing Avenue.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the accident took place around 5:25 PM on Sunday. Multiple people were on the deck when it suddenly collapsed beneath them.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims. They were transported to local hospitals to receive treatment.
It remains unclear why the deck collapsed at the San Pedro home. A full investigation into the accident remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for San Pedro Deck Collapse Accidents
Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for any debt collapse accident. Property owners have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. According to California Civil Code 1714, “Everyone is responsible, not only for the result of his or her willful acts, but also for an injury occasioned to another by his or her want of ordinary care or skill in the management of his or her property or person, except so far as the latter has, willfully or by want of ordinary care, brought the injury upon himself or herself.” There are a number of ways that a deck may have been in an unsafe condition.
- Structural Problems: A deck may have structural problems that can make a collapse more likely. This could include rotting or deteriorated wood, especially near the base of the unit.
- Fasteners: A deck may have rusted or missing fasteners. Another major problem is that the metal connectors used to hold the deck together could be incompatible with a type of lumber used.
- Maintenance Issues: A deck may have poor drainage that leads to hidden water damage over time. Another major issue is termite or insect infestation.
If a property owner is renting their home at the time of an accident, they could face liability if someone is injured in a deck collapse. The company that was responsible for constructing a deck could also be liable for an accident. Companies that build homes or other structures on a property must follow certain safety guidelines. If a company takes safety shortcuts that make decks more likely to collapse, they could be liable in the event of an accident. This is why it is so important that the reason any deck collapses is properly understood.
Steps to Take After a San Pedro Deck Collapse
Many people have been seriously injured or killed in deck collapses over the years. According to the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, “Between 2000 and 2008, there were at least 30 deaths reported as a direct result of deck collapses, and more than 75 percent of the people on a deck were injured or killed when it collapsed.” Victims of deck collapse accidents should take a number of measures to protect their health and legal rights.
- Medical Treatment: Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible. Many of the injuries associated with these accidents were not immediately obvious. Failing to seek medical care or follow-up treatments could seriously hinder any potential legal claim down the road.
- Evidence Preservation: All of the evidence associated with the collapse should be preserved. It should include samples of the material used to construct the deck.
- Contractor Records: All of the records related to the construction of the deck should be gathered. These can help reveal potential flaws or errors that may shed light on why a deck collapsed.
- Legal Review: Any person injured in a San Pedro deck collapse should seek the guidance of a skilled personal injury attorney. An attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
Structure collapses can be highly disruptive and traumatic for all involved. Victims are often left with serious injuries that impair their ability to work. Unfortunately, deck manufacturers and installers will virtually never accept responsibility when someone is injured in a deck collapse. This is why it’s so important that these incidents are properly investigated by an outside party. Victims of deck collapse accidents may be able to receive compensation through a personal injury claim.
