Savannah Van Houtte, 25, of Irvine, Died in Laguna Beach Car Accident Involving Two Work Trucks at 7-Eleven Parking Lot

LAGUNA BEACH, CALIFORNIA (March 12, 2026) – A 25-year-old woman from Irvine identified as Savannah Van Houtte has tragically died in a Laguna Beach truck accident at a 7-Eleven parking lot at 31702 Coast Highway.

Orange County officials are saying the accident took place around 10:00 AM on March 3. Savannah Van Houtte was walking inside of the 7-Eleven parking lot when she was hit by two work trucks that crashed.

The two trucks reportedly belonged to CR&R and Belshire Environmental Services. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim.

Savannah Van Houtte was transported to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo with critical injuries. Sadly, she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

It remains unclear if either driver involved will face any citations. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Liability for Laguna Beach Truck Accidents

Drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21950, “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except as otherwise provided in this chapter.” Drivers must be particularly cautious when traveling in or around any parking lot.

  • Horn: Drivers may need to use their horns to alert pedestrians of their presence.
  • Blind Spots: Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns or backing up in any parking lot.
  • Speed: Drivers should dramatically reduce their speed when any pedestrian is nearby.
  • Scanning: Drivers should remain alert at all times and scan the parking lot for pedestrians and other potential hazards.

When a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian and the roadway, they could be held liable for the accident through a civil claim. Liability for any specific accident could extend to multiple parties. For example, more than one driver could be liable for an accident. Many accidents involve drivers that are each 50% at fault. The company that owned or operated any work truck could also be liable for pedestrian accidents.

Steps to Take After Laguna Beach Pedestrian Collisions

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in car accidents. An increasing number of these collisions involve trucks and other large vehicles. According to NPR, “Vehicles with higher front ends and blunt profiles are 45% more likely to cause fatalities in crashes with pedestrians than smaller cars and trucks, according to new research published Tuesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.” Multiple actions should be taken after any truck accident.

  • Evidence Preservation: All of the evidence associated with the crash should be preserved. This includes any accident photos taken of the site.
  • Medical Records: Medical records related to the victim’s injuries should also be sought. They can help paint a clear picture of how an accident took place.
  • Accident History: The history of collisions at any parking lot or specific accident site should be well understood. When a specific location has a history of collisions, this may indicate that there is a dangerous condition contributing to those collisions.
  • Legal Review: The family of any person who died in a pedestrian collision should carefully consider their legal options with a team experienced in accident reconstruction and negligence claims.

The vast majority of accidents inside parking lots are completely avoidable. They tend to involve situations where drivers are not paying attention to the road ahead of them. It is important that the victims of accidents understand they do have legal rights. They have the right to hold all liable parties accountable through a civil action. This right extends to the surviving family members of any person killed in a crash. They can pursue some measure of justice and accountability through a wrongful death claim.
