Guillermo Figueroa Injured in Yuba City Police Shooting

Guillermo Figueroa, 31, Critically Injured In Officer-Involved Shooting in Yuba City at Home on Rapid Falls Drive

YUBA CITY, CALIFORNIA (March 24, 2026) –  A 31-year-old man identified as Guillermo Figueroa was seriously injured in a Yuba City police shooting at a home on Rapid Falls Drive.

Yuba City officials are saying that the incident took place on February 26. Police officers arrived at the home around 9:15 AM after someone called 911 and reported a man running down the street while naked.

A man later identified as Guillermo Figueroa was not wearing clothing and was smashing the front door of a house. Officers approached him with their guns drawn in the front yard of a home.

He initially complies with their demands and is in the process of being handcuffed. However, there was a struggle that ensued after that incident.

Guillermo Figueroa allegedly picked up a shovel before being hit with a stun gun and baton by officers. Shortly after that encounter, officers opened fire with their service weapons and struck the man.

Paramedics were called to the scene to help him. Guillermo Figueroa was transported to a local area hospital in critical condition.

A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Yuba City Police Shootings

Police departments in California have a legal obligation to use reasonable levels of force when dealing with any suspect. According to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of law, deprives someone of their rights afforded under the Constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. Police officers should take certain actions when they encounter someone who may be in the midst of a mental health crisis.

  • Request backup
  • Calm the situation
  • Avoid physical contact
  • Determine if the suspect is taking medication
  • Acknowledge the suspect’s feelings
  • Not make any threats

The level of force that any police officer should use must scale with the threat assessment that they face. Ideally, officers should work to de-escalate any potential encounter with a suspect. When those efforts are not effective, they should use less-lethal options like tasers. If police officers failed to follow protocol for dealing with suspects who may be in the midst of a mental health crisis, this could serve as evidence of negligence.

Steps to Take After Yuba City Police Shootings

A large portion of police shootings involve people who are suffering from some type of mental health condition. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, “More than four in ten people treated for non-fatal gunshot wounds from a police encounter were diagnosed with a mental health condition, an alcohol- or substance-related disorder, or both.” Multiple actions should be taken after any police shooting.

  • All of the body camera footage associated with the incident should be sought.
  • Medical records related to the shooting should be collected and preserved.
  • The actions of police officers leading up to the encounter should be understood.
  • Victims of police brutality should consider their legal options with a team experienced in civil rights claims.

Police shootings are often highly preventable. In many situations, they involve officers that are either unwilling or unable to de-escalate encounters. One of the major factors in these types of cases is that the police will rush into an encounter without fully assessing the situation. Any person injured due to the excessive force of police officers may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action.
