Woman Injured in East Village Police Shooting

San Diego Police Shoot Woman in East Village Near 16th Street and Island Avenue

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (April 19, 2026) – A woman was injured in an East Village police shooting near the intersection of 16th Street and Island Avenue.

San Diego County officials are saying the incident took place around 5:00 PM on Wednesday. Authorities received a report about a woman who was allegedly assaulting a man with an ice pick.

When officers arrived at the scene, they told the woman to lower the ice pick. She allegedly moved towards officers before being shot.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the injured victim. She was transported to a local area hospital to receive treatment.

The shooting also took place as a number of other people were headed to watch a Padres baseball game in Petco Park.

Liability for San Diego Police Shootings

Police officers have a legal obligation to use the least amount of force necessary for any given encounter. An officer can be liable when they use excessive force. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. There are a number of ways that police officers can make errors in any encounter.

  • Police officers may misidentify an object that they determined to be a threat.
  • Police officers may rush into an encounter without fully assessing the situation.
  • Police officers may not de-escalate an encounter.
  • Police officers may not communicate clearly with the suspect.

Police shootings are often highly preventable. In many situations, they involve officers that are either unwilling or unable to de-escalating encounters. Many of these encounters involve suspects who are suffering from an acute mental health crisis. Unfortunately, a number of officers are not well trained to deal with these types of encounters.

Steps to Take After San Diego Police Shootings

There has been an uptick in police violence against women in recent years. According to the Law Enforcement Epidemiology Project, “In the U.S. during a given year, an estimated 1 million civilians experience police threat of or use of force resulting in a conservative estimate of 75,000 non-fatal injuries requiring hospital treatment and 600-1100 deaths.” Several actions should be taken after a police shooting.

  • Any person who may have witnessed the incident should be interviewed.
  • All body camera footage from the incident should be collected.
  • Medical records related to the shooting should be sought.
  • Victims should contact an experienced civil rights attorney.

It can be difficult to know what to do after any instance of police brutality. Victims are often left with catastrophic injuries. They may also be burdened with high medical bills. To make matters worse, police departments will virtually never accept responsibility if one of their officers seriously injures a suspect. Any person injured due to the excessive force of a police officer may be able to seek damages through a civil claim.
