The children were treated and discharged from the hospital. Ramon Sandoval returned home after spending a week in the ICU.

Now, the victims and neighbors are calling for safer streets after the devastating crash. In particular, there has been a long history of recent incidents at the intersection where the accident took place.

A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing. You can help support the family of the victims through GoFundMe

According to the online fundraiser, “On March 28, 2026, our father and our two younger siblings, ages 8 and 16, were struck by a truck while crossing safely in a marked crosswalk. In an instant, our lives were forever changed. Our dad, Ramon is currently in the ICU. He has already undergone one surgery and will need additional procedures in the coming days.”

Liability for San Mateo County Pedestrian Accidents

Drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid hitting pedestrians. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21954, drivers must slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in a marked crosswalk. Even if a pedestrian is outside a marked crosswalk, this does not relieve a driver of their duty of care to take precautions to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway. There are many factors that could contribute to a pedestrian accident.

  • A large portion of pedestrian accidents involve drivers who are speeding.
  • Drivers are substantially more likely to hit pedestrians when they are making left turns.
  • Driver intoxication is another major contributing factor to pedestrian accidents.
  • Pedestrian accidents are much more likely to occur in the early morning and late evening hours when visibility is reduced.

When a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway, this could be construed as negligence. Liability for a pedestrian accident could extend to several parties beyond any negligent driver. A city could potentially be liable for a pedestrian accident if it was caused by a dangerous condition on public property. For example, an intersection may have an obstructed line of sight due to overgrown foliage.

Steps to Take After San Mateo County Pedestrian Accidents

Many pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in preventable collisions across California. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, “Pedestrian deaths rose 26% percent between 2014 and 2018. Nearly 7,500 pedestrians have died in California between 2009 and 2018. California’s pedestrian fatality rate is almost 25% higher than the national average.” Multiple actions should be taken after any pedestrian collision.

  • The police should be called to the scene as early as possible so that they can investigate.
  • Medical records related to injury should be sought.
  • The history of accidents at the intersection in question should be investigated.
  • Victims should consider their legal options with an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve drivers that are not adequately paying attention to the road ahead of them. In many situations, pedestrian accidents also tend to involve the same set of roads and intersections. It is fully within the power of state and local officials to take action to fix dangerous intersections. But this does not happen as often as it should. Any person injured in a San Mateo County pedestrian accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
