California Department of Aging Contacted Hemet Sheriff’s Station Prior to Elder Abuse Investigation into Yorkshire Village

HEMET, CALIFORNIA (June 26, 2026) – Several people were hospitalized following an investigation into elder abuse at the Yorkshire Village care facility in Hemet.
Riverside County officials are saying that the investigation began in 2025. An ombudsman representative for the California Department of Aging contacted law enforcement in Hemet.
That person told authorities that they have received complaints that patients at the facility were being neglected. Law enforcement arrived at the facility and allegedly uncovered numerous victims of elder abuse and neglect during their investigation.
For its part, Yorkshire Village has denied any wrongdoing. The Department of Justice’s Division of Medical Fraud and Elder Abuse is assisting law enforcement with their investigation.
Liability for Elder Abuse in California
Care facilities in California have a legal obligation to protect their patients from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. According to Cal. Code Regs. Tit. 22, § 87468.1, “(a) Residents in all residential care facilities for the elderly shall have all of the following personal rights: (1) To be accorded dignity in their personal relationships with staff, residents, and other persons. (2) To be accorded safe, healthful and comfortable accommodations, furnishings and equipment.” There are several ways that a long-term care facility may neglect patients.
- Supervision: A care facility may fail to provide adequate supervision for residents with serious medical needs.
- Positioning: A care facility may fail to periodically move a patient at risk of developing pressure ulcers.
- Hygiene: A care facility may have failed to provide adequate hygiene or wound care to patients.
- Medical Care: A care facility may fail to provide patients with the emergency care that they need.
If a long-term care facility fails to adequately care for its own patients, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Ideally, a care facility should develop individualized care plans for all patients. Patients who have neurological issues may need much more extensive care and supervision than certain other patients. If a medical provider at one of these facilities is negligent and harms a patient, the facility that employed them could be liable. As a general rule, employers can be vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their workers who were operating within the course of their job duties.
Steps to Take After Elder Abuse at Care Facilities
Abuse and neglect at care facilities is much more common than many people realize. According to one study in Cureus, “Many studies estimate that about 10% of all people over the age of 65 experience some form of abuse. These rates are often higher in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, despite government regulations aimed toward addressing this issue.” Several steps should be taken after any instance of abuse at a care facility.
- The patient should be transferred to a location where their physical and psychological needs are being met.
- All medical records related to the neglect should be collected and reviewed.
- The history of complaints and allegations against the facility in question should be scrutinized.
- The family of any person who has been abused should seek the legal guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney.
Abuse at care facilities is often much more widespread than initially suspected. By the time a facility is raided by law enforcement, there could be several victims. Multiple factors could contribute to abuse or neglect. Among other things, care facilities tend to have very high turnover rates. This can lead to situations where these facilities are understaffed. This can affect the quality of care that all residents receive. Victims of abuse at care facilities are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
