Calico Dry Lakebed: Passenger, 20, Ejected and Killed When an Off-Roading Jeep Overturns

CALICO, CALIFORNIA (October 10, 2026): Lylianne Parsons, 20, died after being thrown from a Jeep that overturned while off-roading in a dry lakebed near Calico in the early morning of Saturday, October 10, 2026, according to the California Highway Patrol and the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office. The coroner’s office identified her as Lylianne C. Parsons, as reported by Victor Valley News and the Victorville Daily Press. The CHP said alcohol and/or drugs are considered contributing factors in the crash.
The crash was reported at about 2:50 a.m. in the dry lakebed west of Calico Road and north of Calico Boulevard, an unincorporated area of San Bernardino County near Yermo. According to a written statement from the CHP Barstow Area office, a 22-year-old Yermo man was driving the Jeep through the lakebed with Parsons as his passenger. For reasons still under investigation, the Jeep overturned and Parsons was fully ejected, the CHP said.
Emergency crews took Parsons to Barstow Community Hospital, where she died from her injuries a short time later, according to coroner’s records cited by both outlets. Victor Valley News reported that she suffered major injuries to her pelvic area. The condition of the driver has not been released.
The CHP has not said how fast the Jeep was traveling, what caused it to overturn, whether either occupant was wearing a seat belt, or which test results support its finding on alcohol or drugs. These are early accounts. Fault is determined by investigators and, in civil cases, by the courts, and initial findings sometimes change. No one has been convicted in connection with the crash, and anyone accused of a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer M. Powell of the CHP Barstow Area office at (760) 255-5900.
Liability for Calico Off-Road DUI Rollovers
California’s duty of care does not end where the pavement does. Under Civil Code § 1714, every person is generally responsible for harm caused by a failure to use ordinary care, including a driver who takes passengers off-road. Vehicle Code § 23153 makes it a crime to drive under the influence and cause injury to another person, and when a crash is fatal, Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 identifies the family members who may generally bring a wrongful death claim.
- The rollover: The CHP has not said what caused the Jeep to overturn. In off-road crashes, investigators typically look at speed, the terrain, lighting at that hour and the condition of the vehicle.
- The impairment finding: The CHP said alcohol or drugs were contributing factors. In civil cases involving intoxication, courts may also consider punitive damages under Civil Code § 3294.
- A passenger’s claim: A passenger generally does not control how a vehicle is driven. California law generally allows a passenger, or a passenger’s family, to bring a claim against the driver whose negligence caused the crash.
- Insurance coverage: Whether an auto policy covers a crash that happens off-road depends on the policy language and the vehicle. Families often need the policy itself, not only a summary from an adjuster, to understand what coverage exists.
These are general principles of California law, not conclusions about this crash, which remains under investigation by the CHP.
Steps to Take After a Calico Fatal Rollover
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that alcohol-impaired driving crashes accounted for about 30 percent of all traffic deaths in the United States in 2023. Families after a crash like the one at Calico Dry Lake can generally:
- Ask for the CHP report: Contact the CHP Barstow Area office for the report number and how to request the collision report and photographs once the investigation is complete.
- Request the coroner’s findings: The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office can explain how the family may obtain the autopsy and toxicology reports when they are final.
- Follow the criminal process: The San Bernardino County District Attorney decides whether to file charges. Under Marsy’s Law, victims’ families have the right to be notified of court dates.
- Protect the evidence: The Jeep, any phone or vehicle data, and the names of anyone who was at the lakebed that night can matter later. Keep funeral and medical bills, and avoid recorded statements to an insurer until you understand your rights.
Wrongful death claims in California are generally subject to the two-year deadline in Code of Civil Procedure § 335.1. Contact an attorney promptly to protect your rights.
Investigating the Calico Dry Lake Rollover
We at Carrazco Law, A.P.C., a personal injury and civil rights law firm in Irvine, California, extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Lylianne Parsons. Two questions remain open: what does the CHP’s reconstruction show about the Jeep’s speed and path across the lakebed before it overturned, and what will the toxicology results show about the alcohol or drug finding? This week we also reported on a passenger killed in an Arvin crash in which the CHP said alcohol or drugs appeared to be a factor.
