Lotus Road near Coloma Road: Woman Killed Before Dawn and the Driver Leaves the Scene

COLOMA, CALIFORNIA (October 19, 2026): A woman was killed in a Coloma hit-and-run on Lotus Road early Monday, October 19, 2026, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officers responded at about 3:27 a.m. to a report of a person struck by a vehicle near Lotus Road and Coloma Road, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, FOX40 reported, citing the CHP. The driver did not stop.
CHP officers were searching for the vehicle that fled, the agency said, according to FOX40. ABC10 also reported the crash, citing the CHP, and said the cause was unknown and under investigation. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office closed Lotus Road in the area of Highway 49 and Henningson Park for hours while officers worked the scene, ABC10 and CBS Sacramento reported. The investigation is being handled by the CHP Placerville office, according to CBS Sacramento.
On Wednesday, October 21, CBS Sacramento reported that the Coroner Division of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office had identified the woman. Her name has not yet been confirmed by a second source, and this article will be updated when it is. Officials have not shared any information about the suspect vehicle, CBS Sacramento reported. Anyone who was on Lotus Road near Coloma Road early on October 19 and saw a vehicle or the crash is asked to contact the CHP Placerville office.
The CHP has not said what kind of vehicle struck the woman, which direction it was traveling, whether she was walking along Lotus Road or crossing it, or whether any cameras recorded the vehicle. No arrest has been reported. These are early accounts, and initial findings sometimes change.
Liability for the Coloma Hit-and-Run on Lotus Road
Under California Vehicle Code § 20001, a driver involved in a crash that injures or kills another person must stop immediately at the scene, give reasonable help and identify themselves, and a violation can be punished with time in state prison. Vehicle Code § 21954 generally requires every driver to use due care for the safety of any pedestrian on the roadway, and Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 lists the family members who may generally bring a wrongful death claim.
- The driver who fled: If the CHP identifies the driver, California law generally allows the woman’s family to pursue a civil wrongful death claim that is separate from any criminal case.
- Uninsured motorist coverage: When a hit-and-run driver is never found, Insurance Code § 11580.2 generally allows a claim under the uninsured motorist coverage of an auto policy that covers the victim or a relative in the same household, subject to the terms of the policy and its notice requirements.
- Damage to the vehicle: A vehicle that strikes a pedestrian usually carries damage to the front end, hood or windshield. Body shops, parts suppliers and neighbors who notice a damaged car can become part of the search.
- A rural road in the dark: The crash happened before dawn on a stretch of Lotus Road near Highway 49. Investigators can look at lighting, shoulders and sight lines, and claims based on a dangerous condition of public property follow Government Code § 835 and special notice rules.
These are general principles of California law, not conclusions about this crash, which remains under investigation.
Steps to Take After a Hit-and-Run in Coloma
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that most pedestrian deaths in the United States happen in the dark, as this one did. For families and witnesses after a crash like this one, these steps can help:
- Share what you know: Anyone who drove on Lotus Road, Coloma Road or Highway 49 early Monday, or who has seen a vehicle with fresh front-end damage since then, can contact the CHP Placerville office.
- Ask about video: Homes, businesses and vehicles with dash cameras along Lotus Road and Highway 49 may have recorded passing traffic. Ask that any footage be saved as soon as possible, before it is recorded over.
- Notify the insurer: Families should report the crash to any auto insurer that may provide uninsured motorist coverage as soon as possible, because many policies require prompt notice.
- Keep records: Save the collision report number, the coroner’s information, funeral and burial costs and any contact from investigators or insurers.
Legal deadlines and notice requirements apply after a crash, injury or death, and they vary with the facts of each case, the location and the parties involved, including any public agency. Contact an attorney as soon as possible to protect your rights.
Investigating the Coloma Hit-and-Run
We at Carrazco Law, A.P.C., a personal injury and civil rights law firm in Irvine, California, extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the woman who died on Lotus Road. Two questions remain open: did any camera along Lotus Road or Highway 49 capture the vehicle before or after the crash, and was the woman walking along the road or crossing it when she was struck? Her death is one of several fatal pedestrian hit-and-runs in California this week, including a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run in San Pedro where police are looking for a vehicle towing a white trailer.
