SHAFTER, CALIFORNIA (October 24, 2026): Emanuel Ramirez, 18, of Shafter, and Eden Renae Lopez, 18, of Bakersfield, were killed in a Shafter rollover crash on Lerdo Highway west of Scaroni Avenue early Saturday, October 24, 2026, according to the California Highway Patrol and the Kern County Coroner’s Office. BakersfieldNow (KBAK/KBFX) and KGET 17 News reported the crash and the coroner’s identifications.

Officers responded at about 1:32 a.m. to a report of a single-vehicle crash on Lerdo Highway near Shafter, CHP said. A preliminary investigation found that a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling east on Lerdo Highway when, for reasons still under investigation, it left the roadway along the north edge and the driver lost control, according to CHP. The pickup then overturned on the north shoulder and came to rest north of the highway.

Both men were thrown from the Silverado and were pronounced dead at the scene, CHP said. The coroner’s office identified Lopez as the driver and Ramirez as the passenger, KGET and BakersfieldNow reported. CHP said neither man was wearing a seat belt, and that whether alcohol or drugs played a part remains under investigation.

CHP has not said how fast the Silverado was traveling, why it left the north edge of the road, who owned the pickup or whether the condition of the road or the shoulder on that stretch of Lerdo Highway played any role. These are early accounts. Fault is determined by investigators and, in civil cases, by the courts, and initial findings sometimes change. Anyone who saw the pickup or the crash is asked to contact the CHP Bakersfield Area office.

Liability for a Shafter Rollover Crash

California Civil Code § 1714 generally makes every person responsible for harm caused by a failure to use ordinary care, including care in driving a vehicle. Vehicle Code § 22350, the basic speed law, prohibits driving faster than is reasonable or prudent for the visibility, traffic and condition of the road. Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60 generally allows certain family members to bring a wrongful death claim when a death is caused by the wrongful act or neglect of another.

  • A passenger’s claim: CHP and the coroner identified Ramirez as the passenger. A passenger has no control over how a vehicle is driven, and a passenger’s family may have a claim under the auto insurance that covered the Silverado and its driver, depending on the facts and the terms of the policy.
  • Who owned the pickup: CHP has not said who owned the 2005 Silverado. When the owner and the driver are different people, the owner’s insurance policy may also be part of the picture.
  • Leaving the roadway: Why the pickup drifted off the north edge of Lerdo Highway is still under investigation. Speed, lighting, the road surface and the shoulder are typically examined, and if a road defect played a part, a public agency could be involved.
  • Seat belts and the investigation: CHP said neither man wore a seat belt and that alcohol or drug use is still under investigation. Those findings can matter in a civil claim, but they do not by themselves decide who is responsible for the crash.

These are general principles of California law. How they apply will depend on what the CHP’s final report and the coroner’s findings show about the moments before the Silverado left the road.

Steps to Take After a Shafter Rollover Crash

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 36,640 people died in traffic crashes in the United States in 2025. After a late-night rollover on a rural highway, families often learn very little at first and have to gather records from several places at once.

  • Request the CHP report: Contact the CHP Bakersfield Area office to confirm the report number and ask how to request the collision report as soon as possible.
  • Find the insurance information: Identify the policies that covered the Silverado and its driver, and review your family’s own auto policy, which may include coverage that applies.
  • Keep the pickup available: Ask where the Silverado was towed and request in writing that it not be destroyed or sold until it can be inspected.
  • Speak with a lawyer before signing: Insurers may ask for recorded statements or releases. Talk to a lawyer before signing anything or giving a statement about the crash.

Legal deadlines and notice requirements apply after a crash, injury or death, and they vary with the facts of each case, the location and the parties involved, including any public agency. Contact an attorney as soon as possible to protect your rights.
